Starting Out – Should I Make The Switch?
Why should I set up a company instead of being a sole trader?
What’s the risk if I stay a sole trader?
• Venues may stop booking you to avoid handling superannuation
• You could lose gigs as policies change
• You risk ATO audits or non-compliance penalties if super and tax are mishandled
A company structure and SetGo can help manage this properly.
Can’t I just pay my own super as a sole trader?
No. Under SGAA 1992 – Section 12(8), if you’re a sole trader being paid to perform, the venue (payer) is legally responsible for paying super directly to your fund. You can’t invoice a higher fee and contribute the super yourself.
Do I really need a company just to perform music gigs?
If you’re paid for performances, its can be the best way to go – it’s becoming the industry standard. Many venues are now preferring or requiring artists to operate as companies to avoid SG (super) admin and legal liability.
Will this help me get more gigs?
Yes it can. Venues are actively seeking to reduce compliance burdens. Artists with companies are:
- Easier to book
- Seen as more professional
- Not a super risk to the venue
What Set Go Does For You
What exactly does SetGo do?
SetGo is a one-stop platform helping entertainers transition from sole trader to company-based businesses.
We provide:
- Company registration (Pty Ltd)
- ABN, TFN, GST setup
- Xero accounting setup (included)
- Monthly bookkeeping
- BAS and tax lodgements via partnered registered Tax agents
You do the gigs. We do the rest.
What do I get when I sign up with SetGo?
You get a complete “go pro” setup:
- A fully registered Pty Ltd company
- Monthly bookkeeping, reconciliations and reports
- Quarterly BAS via registered Tax agents
- Annual management reporting
- Access to your own Xero dashboard
We’ll even help you learn how to invoice and pay yourself the right way.
I already have a company — can SetGo still help me?
Absolutely. Many performers register a company but don’t run it properly.
We can:
- Clean up your bookkeeping
- Migrate you into Xero
- Set up correct super/payroll/tax systems
- Handle BAS and tax via our registered Tax agents
- Keep everything compliant and stress-free
Many artists have a company on paper but:
- Haven’t registered for GS
- Aren’t reporting Super correctly
- Don’t know how to pay themselves legally
- Haven’t filed BAS or annual tax returns
We’ll review where you’re at and get your company running like a pro with one of our monthly subscriptions – fully compliant, efficient, and stress-free.
I already have an ABN as a sole trader — why do I need a company?
Because a sole trader ABN doesn’t eliminate super obligations. Venues still carry legal liability for your super. A company setup transfers tax and super responsibilities to your business – venues prefer that.
